Where does the GPA come from?
Stellic uses a mixture of Stellic-calculated GPAs and GPA information fed in from your institution's student information system.
Stellic calculates the following GPAs for students:
- Program GPA (the GPA for all eligible courses within that particular program)
- Term GPA
- Any custom GPAs specified by the audit (such as a major-specific GPA for core courses, for example)
The following GPAs are received through the student information system feed and are (in the majority of cases - we have a few partner institutions that fall outside of this on special request only) not calculated by Stellic:
- Cumulative GPA
- Any other custom GPAs specified by the institution (such as a mid-semester GPA)
How is a GPA calculated by Stellic?
Only courses that meet the following conditions may contribute to a Stellic-calculated GPA:
- Courses with at least one credit/unit
- Courses that have received a factorable grade
How does Stellic handle repeated attempts of non-repeatable courses?
- Please note that here we are referring to courses that were repeated by a student but are not allowed to repeat - a common example of this may be something like Calculus I, that students may attempt multiple times, but it's expected that the student can only count one attempt for credit.
- For required courses, as in courses that fall under a "fulfill all" constraint in Stellic - Stellic will calculate ALL attempts of the course into any Stellic calculated GPA.
- For non-required courses, as in any course that does NOT fall under a "fulfill all" constraint - Stellic will only account for ONE attempt of the course in the GPAs that the platform calculates. Only the grade for the attempt that counts towards the program, universal requirement, or that specific requirement will contribute towards the GPA.
- This option can be configured - if your institution wants ALL attempts of courses to count toward the GPAs calculated by Stellic, please work with your institution's Stellic representative to ensure this is configured correctly.
Calculating a Term GPA
All factorable courses in the specified term are calculated into the term GPA.
Calculating a Program GPA
All factorable courses that are counting towards the audit of that program are included in the program GPA. If a course is removed from the program, it will also be removed from the program GPA.
Note: If a course is a required course for that program, any instances of that course will contribute towards the GPA. This means if the student took the course more than once for any reason, both grades will contribute to the program GPA.
Courses that are not required for the program (for instance, an elective option that could be replaced by an entirely different course) will only be counted in the program GPA if they actively appear in the requirements for that program.
Important notes about GPA calculation:
- If a course is a required course for that program, universal requirement, or a specific requirement, all of the student's attempts of the course will contribute towards the GPA (including failing grades)
- If a course is not required, only the course enrollment that counts towards the program, universal requirement, or that specific requirement will contribute toward the GPA
- Course enrollments that are counting towards any requirements that use the “Exclude from GPA” constraint are excluded from this calculation
- If a course enrollment is double-counting towards multiple requirements, and one or more of these requirements have the "Exclude from GPA" constraint, this enrollment will not contribute toward ANY GPAs.
