What is a concentration?
Concentrations (also potentially known as tracks, specializations, subplans, etc. - the name can be customized per institution) are a functionality where a particular set of requirements can be declared by a student within a particular program. For example, a student has a major of Economics, but has a specialization in Business Economics. Business Economics is a built in specialization into the major with its own special set of requirements, and is able to be declared by the student within their SIS.
Concentrations are added to programs within Stellic through the data feed, so concentration names are static and set within the SIS. For programs with concentrations, admins will be able to add requirements to concentrations in the same way you would to any other program.
For students, once a specific concentration is declared, the platform will ignore audit requirements for any other concentrations. This way classes will be sure to count for only the declared concentration. Students will automatically be funneled into their concentration chosen in their SIS, but can try on other concentrations within their audit. You can see the student's view of selecting a concentration within their audit in our article on Adding Concentrations.
How to add concentrations to an audit
Below we outline the steps of adding a concentration to an audit within the requirement editor:
1. Create a new category within the audit. For programs that have a concentration embedded within them, there will be an option to check a box labeled "concentration parent?" - checking this box will pull the concentrations into this category.
2. Once you enter a name and add the requirement, the concentrations will automatically populate into the requirement editor. The names cannot be edited as they are imported directly from the SIS.
3. Build requirements within the concentration categories. If you don't want to include one of the concentrations, you can remove it within the editor.
4. Stellic also gives you the option to create a "default concentration" in the event students do not have a concentration declared. This is an optional feature that can be ignored if it is not needed. To create a default track, click on "add more concentrations", then select the "default category".
This is the only option that exists to create a concentration, and only one default concentration can be created. Trying to add more concentrations will pull up a box that allows you to search for concentrations that exist within the SIS (in other words, you can re-add concentrations that may have been removed).
